She was many things–a student, a dancer, an athlete–even a writer. She packed a whole lot of living into her 15-year-tour of this earth, which ended with a car crash in Edgecomb last Friday.

If you missed it on Tuesday’s WCME Midcoast Morning Buzz, here is some of what took place in the course of Monday evening’s candlelight vigil in memory of Isabelle on the grounds of Great Salt Bay Community School in Damariscotta.

Breaking on WCME https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/breaking-on-wcme/ https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/breaking-on-wcme/#respond Tue, 09 Aug 2016 11:12:25 +0000 https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/?p=17541 Maine Republican senator Susan Collins, in a Washington Post op-ed, says she won’t be supporting Donald Trump.

The writer, a Republican, represents Maine in the Senate.

I will not be voting for Donald Trump for president. This is not a decision I make lightly, for I am a lifelong Republican. But Donald Trump does not reflect historical Republican values nor the inclusive approach to governing that is critical to healing the divisions in our country.

When the primary season started, it soon became apparent that, much like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Mr. Trump was connecting with many Americans who felt that their voices were not being heard in Washington and who were tired of political correctness. But rejecting the conventions of political correctness is different from showing complete disregard for common decency. Mr. Trump did not stop with shedding the stilted campaign dialogue that often frustrates voters. Instead, he opted for a constant stream of denigrating comments, including demeaning Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) heroic military service and repeatedly insulting Fox News host Megyn Kelly.

With the passage of time, I have become increasingly dismayed by his constant stream of cruel comments and his inability to admit error or apologize. But it was his attacks directed at people who could not respond on an equal footing — either because they do not share his power or stature or because professional responsibility precluded them from engaging at such a level — that revealed Mr. Trump as unworthy of being our president.

The first was his mocking of a reporter with disabilities, a shocking display that did not receive the scrutiny it deserved. I kept expecting Mr. Trump to apologize, at least privately, but he did not, instead denying that he had done what seemed undeniable to anyone who watched the video. At the time, I hoped that this was a terrible lapse, not a pattern of abuse.

The second was Mr. Trump’s repeated insistence that Gonzalo Curiel, a federal judge born and raised in Indiana, could not rule fairly in a case involving Trump University because of his Mexican heritage. For Mr. Trump to insist that Judge Curiel would be biased because of his ethnicity demonstrated a profound lack of respect not only for the judge but also for our constitutional separation of powers, the very foundation of our form of government. Again, I waited in vain for Mr. Trump to retract his words.

Third was Donald Trump’s criticism of the grieving parents of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq. It is inconceivable that anyone, much less a presidential candidate, would attack two Gold Star parents. Rather than honoring their sacrifice and recognizing their pain, Mr. Trump disparaged the religion of the family of an American hero. And once again, he proved incapable of apologizing, of saying he was wrong.
I am also deeply concerned that Mr. Trump’s lack of self-restraint and his barrage of ill-informed comments would make an already perilous world even more so. It is reckless for a presidential candidate to publicly raise doubts about honoring treaty commitments with our allies. Mr. Trump’s tendency to lash out when challenged further escalates the possibility of disputes spinning dangerously out of control.
At the same time, I realize that Mr. Trump’s success reflects profound discontent in this country, particularly among those who feel left behind by an unbalanced economy and who wonder whether their children will have a better life than their parents. As we have seen with the dissatisfaction with both major- party nominees — neither of whom I support — these passions are real and the public will demand action.

Some will say that as a Republican I have an obligation to support my party’s nominee. I have thought long and hard about that, for being a Republican is part of what defines me as a person. I revere the history of my party, most particularly the value it has always placed on the worth and dignity of the individual, and I will continue to work across the country for Republican candidates. It is because of Mr. Trump’s inability and unwillingness to honor that legacy that I am unable to support his candidacy.

WCME News February 8, 2016 https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/wcme-news-february-8-2016/ https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/wcme-news-february-8-2016/#respond Mon, 08 Feb 2016 13:19:27 +0000 https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/?p=17247 Some more snow today–patchy blowing snow likely beginning to fall shortly after noon. One to two inches of accumulation this afternoon, another two to four inches tonight, and another 1-2 inches are expected tomorrow afternoon. The National Weather Service says the southern Maine coast is on the fringe of a “monster” storm that would have produced huge amounts of snow had it passed over land, but instead we will see only light fluffy snow.

The 15 million dollar project to replace the Bath viaduct over Route 1 will begin in May–that word from the state transportation department, which says full reconstruction will start in October. The viaduct is a quarter-mile long and runs from High Street to the Sagadahoc Bridge over the Kennebunk River.

The personal finance website Gobankingrates.com finds that Maine is the fourth best place in America to get a divorce from a financial perspective. The site says that Maine’s $120 divorce filing fee is the eighth cheapest in the nation.

Fatal Accident Discovered in Gardiner https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/fatal-accident-discovered-in-gardiner/ https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/fatal-accident-discovered-in-gardiner/#respond Mon, 04 Jan 2016 19:38:26 +0000 https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/?p=17218 Update from WCME News 9

State police are investigating the discovery of a fatal accident along I-295 in Gardiner–an accident that may have happened a week ago. 27-year-old Ian Carter of Lincoln Avenue in Gardiner was found dead inside a vehicle that went off the road into the median near the Route 201 exit, became airborne and struck a tree–some 25 feet off the ground. The car then came to rest down a steep embankment and was discovered by a passerby in the southbound lane, who saw a reflection off the car in the woods.

Troopers say Carter was last seen leaving work in southern Maine on Monday and that no one reported him missing. Since the crash took place off the northbound lane near the Route 201 exit, troopers theorize that the crash may have taken place as Carter was driving home.

WCME Midcoast News November 10, 2015 https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/wcme-midcoast-news-november-10-2015/ https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/wcme-midcoast-news-november-10-2015/#respond Tue, 10 Nov 2015 14:18:53 +0000 https://radiomidcoastwcme.com/?p=17106 Auto sales revenue is significantly higher in Maine than it was last year, but it is not because we are buying more vehicles. We are buying larger and more expensive vehicles, like trucks and SUVs. At Maine Revenue Services, they say retail automotive sales in Maine totaled about three billion dollars through the first eight months of this year, a seven percent increase from the same period last year.

In spite of the presence of more higher-paying out-of-state students, the University of Maine is projecting a $7.2 million dollar budget gap for the fiscal year beginning in July–about the same as this year, a year which was handled without cuts in staff or programs. Almost half of the current gap reflects a two percent pay increase for employees.

An executive of Plum Creek Timber Company says it will be “business as usual” in Maine as the company moves forward with a plan to merge with Weyerhauser Company, forming one of the world’s largest timberland businesses. Weyerhauser plans to buy Seattle-based Plum Creek for $8.4 billion dollars in a deal that would give Weyerhauser control of an estimated 13 million acres nationwide and create a company valued at $23 billion dollars.

Johnson, the last of three Zumwalt-class destroyers, being built at Bath Iron Works, and already more than 40 percent complete. Bloomberg News say it’s a question to be reviewed in the next few weeks in the Pentagon’s independent cost-assessment office. A cancellation could affect not only employment levels at Bath Iron Works, but could also impact numerous businesses supporting the shipyard or operating within its supply chain.

The federal transportation department is doling out over a million dollars for development and upgrades at a hangar building at Brunswick Executive Airport. Steve Levesque, the overseer of the redevelopment of the former naval air station, says the airport is critical to the re-population effort.

93-year-old Concettina Miller of Topsham is listed in critical condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Bath Road and Jordan Avenue in Brunswick. Police say the woman was the driver of a car pulling onto Bath Road and headed for Cooks Corner–a car which headed directly into the path of a pick-up truck, driver of which did not have time to avoid a collision.
