24 Aug Obama Designates National Monument in Maine’s North Woods

Conservationists are delighted and some opponents in northern Maine are seeing red in the aftermath of President Obama’s move to designate over 87 thousand acres of forest land in Maine’s North Woods as what will be known as Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument on land east of Baxter State Park donated by Roxanne Quimby, the wealthy co-founder of the Burt’s Bee’s product line. But not all of the locals are upset–the monument plan has been endorsed by the Katahdin Regional Chamber of Commerce.
